This panning shot shows the life that goes on in the courtyard, and what the movie will include. Also it shows the main character's lifestyle, how he was injured and what he spends his days doing in his little apartment, looking out through the window. It's like were seeing this shot through our own eyes, and what we might hear, as if we're there in the room with him.







I like how this video goes through the deep meaning of how Alfred Hitchcock uses long shots to show the audience what the main character is seeing. This video explains why Alfred used these certain shots. Also what  makes them perfect for this movie.

Analysis: Alfred uses specific signature motifs, such as; character parallels and heavy use of vertical lines, as well as a strong protagonist. In the beginning of the storyline a lot is given away to the viewers, to show the tone of the film. This represents the fact that each of these windows show a sneak preview of what life was like as an American, living in America, each character represents a different background. The camera movements make the film more realistic as if we are there in the film, seeing everything for our selves.
